To say that RIM has had a tough time these past few months is an understatement, and today's news probably won't help raise the morale around Waterloo. According to AppleInsider, oilfield services giant Halliburton will soon be migrating their BlackBerry-toting workforce to run exclusively on a new fleet of iPhones.
I used to scowl when I saw people walking down the street with eyes locked on their phones, but necessity has gotten me in the habit of doing it too. Thanks to a new app called Transparent Screen though, now I can do it free from the fear of falling into an open manhole or into a large fountain.
No, that’s not a hastily Photoshopped image you see here, that's more or less exactly what you’ll see when the app is running. I say “more or less” because while all of the Android UI goes translucent upon launch, you’re afforded with quite a bit of a control over how dramatic the effect is. It’s in your best interest to get familiar with the settings if you plan on using Transparent Screen for a while too, because you'll soon have some choices to make.
Israeli startup Appoxee has raised an undisclosed amount of funding from early-stage investment firm Cyhawk Ventures.
The company offers a service that helps app developers and publishers increase user engagement through rich push notifications and helps them with things like audience segmentation, targeting, analytics and reporting.

According to new research from the NPD Group, Apple passed LG and Samsung to become the top-selling U.S. handset brand in Q4 2011. Combined, the three available models of the iPhone (iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS) accounted for 43% of the U.S. smartphone market.
Android, however, continued to see larger market share at 48%.
Do you believe in a thing called love?
If not, just listen to the rhythm of my heart... Or head on over to AT&T's website to pre-order the Galaxy Note.
If for some reason you don't remember, the Note is a 5.3-inch phone/tablet hybrid that showed its face in a costly Samsung commercial during last night's Super Bowl. Its claim to fame would be a little stylus, what Samsung is calling the S-Pen, which makes the Note a tad more useful when you're in a pinch and need to jot down a note or something quick like that.
Samsung's next flagship smartphone needs to be huge, iPhone 4 huge. It needs to be as competitive as the Galaxy S II as its set to go head-to-head with the iPhone 5. But success won't be found as easily this time. Samsung had nearly a full year to design and release Galaxy S II after the iPhone 4's release. The company doesn't have that luxury this time around.
South Korean news outlet Electronic Times News just published a report that pegs the S3 as a superphone on a diet. The report states that printed circuit boards, chips and connectors allowed for an overall thickness (or thinness) of just 7mm. That's 1.9mm thinner than the current Galaxy SII -- not that several millimeters really mater. But even though the phone is thinner overall, Samsung is reportedly packing their next flagship to the gills.
Mobeam, the San Francisco-based startup whose technology enables mobile phones to interact with laser scanners at the point of sale, has added another $1.5 million to its Series A round. The company had previously raised $4.9 million in October 2011.
The round includes new investor DFJ Athena, a Korea-focused venture fund affiliated with Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and brings in new funds from existing investor and board chairman, Ben DuPont.
It's hard not to love the Galaxy Nexus, even if you're not a Fandroid. With a 4.65-inch 720p display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and Android 4.0 ICS to boot, what's not to love?
Well, if you're being picky, perhaps you're yearning for a white GalNex, in which case I have good and bad news. Which do you want first?
Forget about the Lumia 900 for a minute. Nokia just announced white Nokia Lumia 800 is finally on the release block and scheduled to hit stores later this month. Availability will be limited to Europe initially but it will eventually hit other countries as well.
Other than the stark white exterior, it's essentially the same phone as its colored counterparts. The albino edition (not the official name) still has the same 3.7-inch screen, 16GB of storage, 1.4GHz processor and WinPhone 7.5 operating system.RIM shows off new features for PlayBook 2.0 at DevCon originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 07 Feb 2012 08:31:00 EDT. The Globe and Mail | Email this | CommentsGlasses-free 3DTVs sporting 4K resolution don't exactly match up to the everyman's budget. Still, the tech needs to trickle down to the masses somehow and it appears Spatial View's keen to take up that three-dimensional, plebeian mantle. Available today, the outfit's inventively titled 3DeeScreen snaps onto 15.6-inch laptops of the Windows 7 variety to translate ordinary 2D images and video into autostereoscopic eye candy. And, unlike prevailing iterations that depend upon strict viewing zones, this ad hoc implementation can adjust to a viewer's position through the use of eye-tracking software, letting their zombified heads loll about while they tune in and drop out. Of course, if you choose to plunk down $130 for this visual pizzazz, you'll be jonesing for a library of compatible media. Good thing then the company's prepared to scratch that imaginary itch with a planned one-stop hub, dubbed 3DeeCentral, that'll offer up a curated mix of free and paid content. Need to know more? Then peruse the official presser below while you wonder how the other one percent lives.

Sony's website now lists Japanese release dates and prices for two PS Vita power accessories that you're likely to need. The PCH-ZPC1 J portable charger is a 135g (4.8-ounce) unit that takes seven hours to charge to its full 5,000mAh capacity and is then good for around one and half charges of your console -- we reckon that'd equate to over 12 hours of mixed-use sessions or at least seven hours of solid gaming. It'll be out on April 5th for ¥4,500 ($60). Meanwhile, the PCH-ZCA1 J car charger will hit retailers a couple of weeks earlier on March 22nd priced at ¥1,500 ($20) -- and there's really not much more to say about it except that a dead Vita on a road trip would be both a travesty and an oxymoron. Oh, just in case it hasn't already been etched into your memory, February 22nd is launch day in the US and Europe.Sony PlayStation Vita charging accessories detailed in Japan originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 07 Feb 2012 05:30:00 EDT. Sony (Japanese) | Email this | Comments It looks like it. It seems plenty of you were enraptured by that hypnotic white Lumia 800 we paid a visit to yesterday, but in all the glossy fun, Nokia accidentally revealed the above press shot -- a white Lumia 900. The picture was soon lifted from Nokia's Conversations blog, but it remains on its Facebook page, flashing an exposed micro-USB port and front-facing camera that identifies this snow-white slab as the Lumia 900 kind. The press shot also flashes a view of that non-curved glass front; it certainly looks like our wishes are coming true. Now we just have to wait and see if this color option is ready for that plausible March release date.
Update: Dave Zatz was apparently offered a choice of white or black models when discussing his Lumia 900 pre-order options at a Microsoft store. Maybe we'll see this one from launch.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in.]

Elizabeth Banks isn't afraid to kiss and tell. The actress, who's set to star in two high-profile movies this spring -- The Hunger Games and What to Expect When You're Expecting -- dishes in the new issue of Women's Health about having to teach Melissa McCarthy's husband how to kiss for the camera.
In the upcoming romantic comedy, Banks and Ben Falcone (whom most audiences will remember as the U.S. Marshal that McCarthy flirts with in Bridesmaids) play one of the many highlighted expecting couples, but the comedic actor had no experience smooching someone other than his Oscar-nominated wife for the screen.
"I had a great co-star named Ben who had never done a kissing scene before, so I had to guide him very sillily through our kissing moment," Banks said. "He had a hard time touching me, and I literally had to take his hand and like put it in inappropriate places to get him used to the idea of touching me inappropriately."
Audiences will have to wait until May 18 to see if Banks, who turns 38 this week, and Falcone have believable chemistry, but first, fans will be lining up to watch her play the stylish Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games.
"Effie Trinket was a really fun role to get ready for because so much of it was about her hair and her clothes and the way she talks and walks," Banks revealed in a behind-the-scenes video. "She is a very theatrical person. I watched a lot of Auntie Mame to prepare for playing Effie."

Angelina Jolie has traded her blood vial and knife collection for a big family and a United Nations ambassadorship -- but Brad Pitt says she hasn't lost touch with her naughty side. On Monday's CBS This Morning, Pitt confirmed Jolie's recent assertion to 60 Minutes that she's "still a bad girl." (Skip to 4:18 on the video below to watch Pitt's response!)
"She's still a bad girl. Delightfully so," said Pitt, 48, with a big grin. "It's not for public consumption."
In November, Jolie, 36, told 60 Minutes that her bad-girl side is "in its place now."
"It belongs to Brad, it belongs to our adventures," said the actress-director.
Also during his interview with CBS This Morning, the Moneyball star talked about the effect that his large family has had on his career.
"Family's added everything to it. In a strange way, the work has gotten better because I worry less about it," Pitt told host Charlie Rose. "(Family) takes any pressure of self-absorption that we can have in our business, (and) it just evaporates."
Pitt explained that he and Jolie balance work and family by traveling as a family unit whenever one of them is on location. The six children, from 10-year-old Maddox to 3-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne, are "quite used to a bit of jet lag" and
